Mystery 1: Volcanoes, Rock Cycle & Earth's Surface

Mapping Volcanoes

Step 1: Print materials.

For each group of 8 students, print one set of Volcano Mapping Sheets .

  • For 8 students, print 1 set.
  • For 9 to 16 students, print 2 sets.
  • For 17 to 24 students, print 3 sets.
  • For 25 to 32 students, print 4 sets.

Each pair of students will need:

  • a red pencil to mark volcanoes on the map
  • pencils to write with

At the end of the activity, you will need:

  • wall space
  • pins or tape to fasten the maps to the wall

Mystery 2: Volcanoes, Rock Cycle, and Earth's Surface

Bubble Trouble

Step 1: Get supplies and print worksheets.

Students work in pairs. Each pair of students will need:

  • newspaper or plastic for covering their desk or table
  • a paper plate
  • a plastic spoon
  • two 3 oz cup (dixie cups) for each pair of students
  • a sample of thin lava and a sample of thick lava in 3 oz. cups (dixie cups)
  • a paper mat

Each student will need:

To prepare the thick lava, you will need:

  • a gallon-sized ziplock bag and a pair of scissors
  • 2 cups of flour
  • 1-½ cups of water
  • red food coloring (optional)

This should make enough lava for about 15 groups.

Step 2: Prepare the “lava.”

To make thick lava, watch this video to see how we mix up a batch in a plastic bag without making a mess. You can also mix your lava in a mixing bowl.

To make thin lava, we use plain water (or water with a drop or two of food coloring).

Mystery 3: Weathering & Destructive Forces

Students work in pairs. Each pair of students will need:

  • a container with a lid (we use plastic food storage containers like these.)
  • 5 sugar cubes (available in the grocery store)
  • two washable markers (available at Amazon )
  • a paper plate
  • 2 Sugar Shake Data Sheets (2-pages each)
  • 2 pencils
