Discuss: What do you think is happening in your cups of mineral soups right now?
Reveal answer
The crystals are growing!
Discuss: If the crystals are there and growing, why can’t you see them? Why don’t you have visible crystals in your cup now?
Reveal answer
The crystals need time to grow!
Luckily, your teacher happens to have already done this activity a couple of hours ago. Let’s see it! Go to next slide to see picture.
Discuss: Do you think these might be diamonds that you’re growing? Can you think of a way to test whether these are diamonds?
(Hint: Think of the specialist in the story.)
Reveal answer
We could scratch the crystal on glass to find out... see next slide for a video of the scratch test.
Discuss: So are you growing diamonds?
Reveal answer
No, the crystal wasn't able to scratch glass.
Discuss: Do you think the mineral soup found in these chamber was hot or cold? HINT: The mineral soup is what made the cracks.
Reveal answer
Answer: The soup must have been very hot, because the cracks go upwards, and heat rises. It also gets hotter the deeper you go down in the Earth.
Discuss: So what do you think would happen if the chamber of mineral soup were SO HOT that it caused a MASSIVE crack that reached the SURFACE of the Earth?
Reveal answer
You’ll have to wait till the next mystery to find out!
