In this mini-lesson, students explore how different kinds of insects make sounds in different ways. Though there lots of differences, they all start with vibrations!
Here are some writing prompts to help students reflect on the mini-lesson. Feel free to copy and paste them into an assignment.
Bonus Activity: Make noise like an insect! What kinds of sounds can you make with things around you? Maybe you’ll rub two pencils together to make a sound, like a cricket. Or maybe you’ll press a plastic bottle with your thumb so it pops up and down to make a sound, like a cicada. Or maybe you’ll find another way to make sound. Try to make at least 5 different sounds with the items around you. When you’re done, choose your favorite sound you made and play it with a friend. How does playing it with them change the sound?
