In this mini-lesson, students will explore the similarities and differences between various animal hearts. In the no-prep activity, Animal Heart Safari, students go on a virtual safari to learn more about the variation in animal heart size. Students also participate in a scavenger hunt, looking for objects that are similar sizes to animal hearts. Students can then use this information to create Valentine's cards.

Your heart is smaller than an adult’s heart. Your heartbeat is also different from an adult’s! Try feeling your heartbeat. Sit quietly. Put two fingers on the side of your neck, right below your chin. Can you feel something moving under your fingers? That's your pulse, the movement of blood pushed by your heart. If you don't feel it, move your fingers a little and try again. It takes practice and patience, but you can do it! Then, see if you can feel the heartbeat of an adult. Is it beating at the same speed, faster, or slower?
