We suggest students work in pairs. Homeschool students can work on their own.

K-2 Versus 3-5 Activity

In both versions of the activity, students make a model of a snowflake. The K-2 version includes additional scaffolding to guide students through designing their model, whereas the 3-5 version emphasises more creative design choices.

Teacher Tips

• We suggest using coffee filters because they are easier to cut through, but you can use white paper instead. Cutting through paper might be trickier!
• The folding instructions are VERY important for students to create a symmetrical model. We suggest emphasizing careful folding to students so that they take their time with these folds.
• If students write their names on their snowflakes, we suggest having them use a crayon to avoid tearing the coffee filter.
• Snowflake models are wonderful winter classroom decorations! You can hang them from the ceiling, add them to a bulletin board, or tape them on your classroom windows for the whole school to see!
